RESUMO

This paper proposes a plan to manage energy consumption in residential areas using the demand response method, which allows electricity users to contribute to the reliability of the power system by controlling their usage. Due to the growing population, the residential sector consumes a significant amount of energy, and the objectives of this study are to lower electricity costs and the peak to average ratio, as well as reduce the amount of imported electricity from the grid. The study aims to maximize profit by properly utilizing renewable energy sources and addressing energy trading. The manta ray foraging optimization (MRFO) and long term memory MRFO (LMMRFO) algorithms are used to solve this problem. Firstly, the validation of the proposed LMMRFO technique is confirmed by seven benchmark functions and compared its results with the results of the well-known optimization algorithms including hunter prey optimization, gorilla troops optimizer, beluga whale optimization, and the original MRFO algorithm. Then, the performance of the LMMRFO is checked on the optimization of smart home energy management. In the suggested approach, a smart home decides whether to purchase or sell electricity from the commercial grid based on the cost, demand, and production of electricity from its own microgrid, which consists of a wind turbine and solar panels. Energy storage systems support the stable and dependable functioning of the power system since the solar panel and wind turbine only occasionally produce electricity. Through various case studies, the proposed plan is tested and found to be effective in reducing electricity costs and the peak to average ratio while maximizing profit. Furthermore, a comparative study is conducted to demonstrate the legality and effectiveness of LMMRFO and MRFO.

RESUMO

Amoxicillin/clavulanate (Co-Amox), a commonly used antibiotic for the treatment of bacterial infections, has been associated with drug-induced liver damage. Quercetin (QR), a naturally occurring flavonoid with pleiotropic biological activities, has poor water solubility and low bioavailability. The objective of this work was to produce a more bioavailable formulation of QR (liposomes) and to determine the effect of its intraperitoneal pretreatment on the amelioration of Co-Amox-induced liver damage in male rats. Four groups of rats were defined: control, QR liposomes (QR-lipo), Co-Amox, and Co-Amox and QR-lipo. Liver injury severity in rats was evaluated for all groups through measurement of serum liver enzymes, liver antioxidant status, proinflammatory mediators, and microbiota modulation. The results revealed that QR-lipo reduced the severity of Co-Amox-induced hepatic damage in rats, as indicated by a reduction in serum liver enzymes and total liver antioxidant capacity. In addition, QR-lipo upregulated antioxidant transcription factors SIRT1 and Nrf2 and downregulated liver proinflammatory signatures, including IL-6, IL-1ß, TNF-α, NF-κB, and iNOS, with upregulation in the anti-inflammatory one, IL10. QR-lipo also prevented Co-Amox-induced gut dysbiosis by favoring the colonization of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Bacteroides over Clostridium and Enterobacteriaceae. These results suggested that QR-lipo ameliorates Co-Amox-induced liver damage by targeting SIRT1/Nrf2/NF-κB and modulating the microbiota.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) pollution is a newly emerging environmental issue. MPs can accumulate within animals and humans, which can pose a serious health threat. Petroleum-based polyethylene (PE) is one of the most popular plastics. Accordingly, its exposure rates have steadily increased over the years. This study aimed to analyze the effects of PE-MPs on the hematological system of albino rats and the epigenetic effect. Five groups of adult male eight-weeks-old rats received either distilled water, corn oil, 3.75 mg/kg PE-MPs, 15 mg/kg PE-MPs, or 60 mg/kg of PE-MPs, daily by oral gavage for 35 days. PE-MPs significantly increased the body weights of the rats and lipid peroxidation, with concomitant reduction of superoxide dismutase activity and depletion of reduced glutathione, thus adversely affecting oxidants/antioxidants balance. Moreover, PE-MPs increased the % of abnormal RBCs, irregular cells, tear drop cells, Schistocyte cells, and folded cells. The genotoxic effects on DNA were evident by increased DNA damage, confirmed by the comet assay, in addition to increased DNA methylation. The effects of PE-MPs have been shown to be dose correlated. In conclusion, this study provides evidence of dose-related PE-MPs-induced hematological, genotoxic, and epigenetic effects in mammals, and thus emphasizes the potentially hazardous health effects of environmental PE-MPs.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Nonmalignant meningioma (NM) is the most common brain tumor in the United States (U.S.), accounting for 54% of nonmalignant brain tumors. This study aims to investigate the causes of death in NM patients and their possible associations with demographic factors. METHODS: Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, we analyzed 116,430 NM patients diagnosed between the years 2004 and 2018. RESULTS: A total of 31,640 deaths were observed. Non-tumor diseases accounted for 63.9% of all deaths. Out of these non-tumor deaths, we found that the most common causes were heart disease (18.7% of deaths), cerebrovascular disease (7.4% of deaths), and Alzheimer disease (4.5% of deaths). On the other hand, cancer was responsible for 27.4% of deaths, while in situ and benign tumor deaths accounted for only 8.7%. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first U.S. population-based study to investigate the causes of death in NM patients. We found that non-tumor diseases accounted for the majority of deaths. The risks of mortality caused by heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer disease were significantly elevated. These data can help improve survival outcomes for NM patients, particularly if adjusted by demographic risk factors.

RESUMO

A series of 15 lanthanide-containing coordination polymers, both 3D- and 2D-networks, as well as complexes of Ln-trichlorides with 3-(3-pyridyl)pyrazole (3-PyPzH), were synthesized. A large structural diversity is observed depending on the ligand content: 3∞[Ln(3-PyPzH)Cl3], Ln = Eu and Gd, of sra topology, 2∞[Sm(3-PyPzH)Cl3], 2∞[Ln2(3-PyPzH)3Cl6]·2solv, Ln = Eu3+, Tb3+, Dy3+, Ho3+ and Er3+, solv = Tol and MeCN, of sql topology and 2∞[Ln(3-PyPzH2)Cl4], Ln = La and Nd, of hcb topology with salt like complexes of the formula [(3-PyPzH2)][Ln(3-PyPzH)2Cl4], Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy and Ho. The products were characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, high-temperature X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetry (DTA/TG) combined with mass spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), IR-spectroscopy, UV-visible spectrophotometry, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility. Absorption spectroscopy shows ion-specific 4f-4f transitions that can be assigned to Sm3+, Eu3+, Dy3+, Ho3+ and Er3+ in a wide range from the UV-VIS to NIR region. An excellent antenna effect through ligand-metal energy transfer was observed in 2∞[Tb2(3-PyPzH)3Cl6]·2solv, leading to high efficiency of the luminescence indicated by a quantum yield up to 76%. Direct current magnetic susceptibility studies reveal the absence of interatomic interaction for Dy3+ and Er3+ and weak ferromagnetic interaction for Ho3+. Thermal analysis shows good stability up to 365 °C for 2∞[Ho2(3-PyPzH)3Cl6]·2MeCN.

RESUMO

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common type of cancer, it is considered a genetically heterogeneous disease with different molecular pathways being involved in its initiation and progression. Testes-specific protease 50 (TSP50) gene is a member of cancer/testis antigens that encodes for threonine protease enzyme. Overexpression of TSP50 was found to enhance the progression and invasion of breast cancer and other malignant tumors. SERCA2 is widely expressed in several body tissues; its aberrant expression has been involved in many cancers. IL-8 is an inflammatory cytokine. Alongside its role in inflammation, its expression was reported to induce the migration of tumor cells. Aim: Study the expression of TSP50, SERCA2 and IL-8 in colorectal adenoma (CRA), CRC and normal colonic tissues to compare the expression of these biomarkers in relation to clinicopathological parameters and prognostic factors. Results: TSP50, SERCA2 and IL-8 expression varied between normal colonic tissues, CRA and CRC. Significant statistical association was detected between the three biomarkers' overexpression and degree of dysplasia in CRA. Also, significant statistical relation was found between the three biomarkers' overexpression and presence of lympho-vascular invasion, advanced TNM staging and high intra-tumoral inflammatory infiltrate. Multivariable analysis showed that the overexpression of the three biomarkers is significantly associated with worse prognosis. Conclusion: The expression of TSP50, SERCA2 and IL-8 was different between the normal tissue and neoplastic colorectal tissue on one hand and between CRA and CRC on the other. Increased expression of these biomarkers in neoplastic epithelial cells of colorectal carcinoma is associated with adverse prognostic factors and could be considered as independent prognostic factors.

RESUMO

Homoleptic, 3D coordination polymers of the formula 33 ∞ [Ln(3-PyPz)3 ] and 3 ∞ [Ln(4-PyPz)3 ], (3-PyPz)- =3-(3-pyridyl)pyrazolate anion, (4-PyPz)- =3-(4-pyridyl)pyrazolate anion, both C8 H6 N3 - , Ln=Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, were obtained as highly luminescent frameworks by reaction of the lanthanide metals (Ln) with the aromatic heterocyclic amine ligands 3-PyPzH and 4-PyPzH. The compounds form two isotypic series of 3D coordination polymers and exhibit fair thermal stability up to 360 °C. The luminescence properties of all ten compounds were determined in the solid state, with an antenna effect through ligand-metal energy transfer leading to high efficiency of the luminescence displayed by good quantum yields of up to 74 %. The emission is mainly based on ion-specific lanthanide-dependent intra 4 f-4 f transitions for Tb3+ : green, Dy3+ : yellow, Sm3+ : orange-red, Eu3+ : red. For the Gd3+ -containing compounds, the yellow emission of ligand triplet-based phosphorescence is observed at room temperature and 77 K. Co doping of the Gd-containing frameworks with Eu3+ and Tb3+ allow further shifting of the chromaticity towards white light emission.

RESUMO

In the field of orthopedics and traumatology, polyether ether ketone (PEEK) serves a significant role as a suitable alternative to traditional metal-based implants like titanium. PEEK is being used more commonly to replace traditional dental products. For bonding with various adhesive agents and preserved teeth, the surface alteration of PEEK was investigated. The aim of this research was to understand how different types and contents of nano-sized silica (SiO2) fillers influenced the surface and mechanical properties of PEEK nanocomposites used in prosthodontics. In this work, PEEK based nanocomposites containing hydrophilic or hydrophobic nano-silica were prepared by a compression molding technique. The influence of nano-SiO2 type and content (10, 20 and 30% wt) on surface properties of the resultant nanocomposites was investigated by the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), surface roughness analysis, and contact angle measurement. The crystalline structures of PEEK/SiO2 nanocomposites were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy. Mechanical properties were measured by microhardness, elastic compression modulus, and flexural strength. All nanocomposites showed increased surface roughness compared to pure PEEK. SEM images revealed that nanocomposites filled with low content hydrophobic nano-SiO2 showed uniform dispersion within the PEEK matrix. The introduction of 10 wt% of hydrophobic nano-SiO2 to the PEEK matrix improved elastic modulus, flexural strength, and microhardness, according to the findings. The addition of nano-SiO2 fillers in a higher weight percentage, over 10%, significantly damages the mechanical characteristics of the resultant nanocomposite. On the basis of the obtained results, PEEK/SiO2 nanocomposites loaded with low content hydrophobic nano-SiO2 are recommended as promising candidates for orthopedic and prosthodontics materials.
